Why Participate?
Participating MCPs will help identify and elevate effective health equity interventions for broader adoption. By participating, you will:
- Contribute to improving access, member experience, and outcomes for Medi-Cal members.
- Help build and advance the evidence base for effective health equity strategies across California's Medi-Cal managed care system.
All submitting organizations will receive individualized assessment and recommendations to strengthen their efforts from a panel of health equity, quality improvement, and managed care leaders. Participants whose interventions are selected will also receive:
- A professionally developed case study highlighting their intervention, outcomes, implementation process, and lessons learned.
- The ability to determine the appropriate level of attribution and visibility for shared lessons and resources.
What We Are Looking For:
We are seeking interventions that have already been implemented and shown evidence of success in reducing health disparities. Specifically, interventions that have:
- Improved patient access, experience, or outcomes for a population that experiences a racial, ethnic, or linguistic disparity; and/or
- Closed an identified disparity by improving outcomes for a population that experiences a racial, ethnic, or linguistic disparity relative to a referent population.
We encourage submissions from plans that have demonstrated not only improved equity outcomes, but also operational, financial, quality, compliance, or risk-management benefits associated with their approach.
While there is no required look-back period, interventions should have been implemented long enough to generate meaningful results and provide insights into how it was implemented and what contributed to its success. Both ongoing and completed interventions are eligible, provided sufficient results and implementation experience are available for review.
Examples of Relevant Practices Areas:
We are interested in interventions that have demonstrated improvement in equity-related outcomes, including but not limited to:
Clinical Quality Outcomes: Improvement in clinical quality outcomes for a specific population that experiences health inequities, as measured by a change in HEDIS, MCAS, or other clinical quality measures, such as:
- Well-child visits and immunizations
- Breast and cervical cancer screening
- Blood pressure and A1C control
- Other preventative, chronic care, behavioral health, or maternal health measures
Access and Experience Outcomes: Improvement in access and experience for a specific population that experiences health inequities, as measured by encounter data, claims data, CAHPS, and other health plan performance measures, such as:
- Grievances and appeals
- Utilization management processes
- Network adequacy
- Appointment access
- Language access and culturally responsive care
- Member retention, engagement, or navigation support

A committee of health care quality and equity advisors and CCI staff will review submissions. Respondents will be notified by mid-January whether their submission has been selected.
For selected submissions, CCI will work with participating organizations to document and share key implementation insights and lessons learned. This may include:
- Interviews with the team that implemented the intervention
- Request for supporting data, templates, and/or tools
- Review of a case study written by CCI
CCI will treat submitted materials as confidential and will not publish or share information beyond the review committee without permission from participating organizations. We are committed to minimizing participant burden while maximizing opportunities for shared learning and advancement of health equity across California’s Medi-Cal managed care system.
